‘A Positive Addition to Our Day’

Students at Zela Davis Elementary in Hawthorne, CA, took off like rockets as they read in our three-week Jester Read-A-Thon to give The Jester Has Lost His Jingle books and dolls to local Venice Family Clinics.

Altogether, the ZD Rockets read 87,151 pages so children treated at the Maxine Waters Health & Dignity Center and HSD Health and Wellness Center would be relaxed during health-care visits.

“This is a positive addition to our day,” reported transitional kindergarten teacher Sandra Marin.

The school’s top reader was fourth grader Betselote Bufebo, who read 6,625 pages, while Meryl Gion’s fourth-fifth grade classroom read 20,914, the most pages of any classroom in the school.

For most students, the Reading Makes A Difference program provided their introduction to The Jester, David Saltzman’s best-selling children’s book. Noted second-grade teacher Kimberly Burrows, “Students liked the book and attending the introductory and awards assemblies.”

Principal Miguelina Lopez and Community School Teacher on Special Assignment Shannon Newbell said students and teachers are looking forward to the program’s return.
