Neil Fachon
Neil Fachon (5/8/96 – 2/19/17) grew up in East Greenwich, RI and was a student at Northeastern University’s College of Engineering when he was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a rare aggressive inoperable brain stem tumor more typically found in children ages 5 to 9. During high school, Neil actively participated in the Student Leadership Training Program (SLTP), an all-volunteer organization which placed The Jester Has Lost His Jingle at the core of its service learning project. Neil is well-remembered for his optimistic attitude, and his passion for problem solving. In applying to Northeastern, Neil wrote about how he “discovered that the ability to be a leader and make a difference in the world was right inside me all along…I unearthed within myself a new level of kindness and caring, of optimism and positivity, of determination and perseverance…” These characteristics were put to the test as Neil searched outside the box for a solution to his predicament, won his right to participate in a promising clinical trial therapy, and then outlived his three-month prognosis by almost nine months.
