Scotties Chase Their Own Record – And Win!!!

Marshall Elementary School Scotties read doggedly in their fourth Reading Makes A Difference program to beat their own record of excellence.

And they did!

Students read 184,967 pages in three weeks, up from 148,987 in their third program.

Students also selected the organization that they believed would benefit greatly from receiving copies of The Jester Has Lost His Jingle generated by their reading. They decided on Orange County United Way’s “United for Student Success Initiative.” All were thrilled that the organization’s Volunteer Engagement Specialist Miranda Tula participated in the Jester Capstone Awards Assembly and thanked them profusely for their thoughtfulness. “This is a special event all students enjoyed,” noted first-grade teacher Lilly Nguyen.

Teachers also noted how deeply individual students were positively impacted by The Phund program. “A student who usually is quiet and modest and doesn’t show his love for reading won the top reader award in the class,” fourth-grade teacher Jacqueline Rossberg observed.

Top reader among the lower grades was second grader Charlotte Greenfield who read 2,855 pages. Top reader in the upper grades was Ian Montelomgo, who read 14,169 pages.

Asking for the program to return, teachers noted other benefits. “The book itself and its message are a great resource for Social Emotional Learning,” said second-grade teacher Pamela Celis. “The option to make Sunshine Cards really helped to drive the message of kindness home to students.”

Dr. Peter Marshall’s Scotties Read Doggedly ‘For a Purpose’

Funded by the Doreen D. Marshall Fund for Youth and David & Ludie Henley, the high-spirited Scotties of Dr. Peter Marshall Elementary in Anaheim, CA, read and read and read during their three-week Jester Read-A-Thon. Their goal? To give Jester books to Children’s Hospital of Orange County patients.

“Reading with a purpose was a positive experience for my students,” noted 6th-grade teacher Cristy Carrillo,
who also praised Phund Executive Director Amy Hastings’ entertaining, informative assemblies: “It was nice for them to learn about The Jester Has Lost His Jingle and the story behind it.”

With friendly competition among lower-grade as well as upper-grade classes, Scotties “were reading more –
and reading more challenging books,” observed Mrs. Carrillo.

In all, students read 148,987 pages, with Cesar Dominguez’s 6th graders topping the upper grades by reading 16,456 pages. Top reader was a 6th grader in Brittany Allison’s class who read 8,099 pages. Top lower-grade reader was a 2nd grader in Hector Loya’s class who read 1,963 pages.

Said CHOC’s Patient and Experiences Program Manager Rose Ovalle, “Your commitment has truly made an impact on so many patients and their families,” she said. “We appreciate all of your hard work in making this donation possible.”
