‘Students Enjoyed Comparing Pages Read’
Jefferson Elementary School Eagles were flying high as they saw their pages read reaching for the sky. In their first Jester read-a-thon they read a total of 43,660 pages, greatly pleasing Principal Esau Berumen and Community Liaison Edith Trinidad.
Readers were delighted to learn that children cared for at two local Venice Family Clinics (Maxine Waters Health & Dignity Center at York Elementary and HSD Health and Wellness center at Zela Davis Elementary) would receive Jester books and dolls because of their reading prowess.
“Students enjoyed comparing pages read with each other, which led to them motivating each other to read more,” fourth-grade teacher Michelle Sharp recounted.
Gary Anderson’s fifth graders topped the list with 8,209 pages read. The top reader in the school was Za’Kyia Williams who tallied 1,606 pages.
“I was so happy to see what kind of books students liked to read at home, and that they are reading in their free time outside of school,” noted second-grade teacher Maria Tomlinson. “One student recently got an L.A. County library card, and this program motivated her to use her new books to track her reading.”
