‘It Takes Just One Little Laugh…’

Kornblum Cardinals spread their wings for their first Jester & Pharley Read-A-Thon. Kicking off the program on Super Heroes Day turned them into Super Hero Readers determined to bring Jester books and dolls to children treated at two Venice Family Clinics.

When the three-week Read-A-Thon ended, the Cardinals had 153,410 pages in their nest. “Students were engaged to go home and read since it was for a cause,” noted fourth-grade teacher Elizabeth Diaz.

“Students read for longer periods of time, so it increased their stamina,” observed third-grade teacher Kacy Fields Horlocher. “Students talked to each other about their page goals and encouraged each other to do their BEST!”

And do their best they did, with Angela Reid’s fifth graders reading the most pages and winning the top-reading classroom crown. Top reader Melina Kuk read 9,345 pages, contributing mightily to the class total – 30,019!

Recipients of Jester books and dolls from Cardinal student reading were The Maxine Waters Health & Dignity Center at York Elementary and HSD Health and Wellness Center at Zela Davis Elementary.

“Reading The Jester book aloud was a great reminder for my students that it takes just one little laugh or happy moment to change your attitude, or some else’s,” noted second-grade teacher Jennifer Sutrin.
